Mushin /TaeKwomDo Back >>

Mushin, in literal translation, means "no mind." In practical terms, this means that the martial artist may operate by absolving specific internal fears, thoughts or emotions during combat. For example, during sparring, the martial artist achieving mushin will no longer fixate upon their opponent or a target. Instead, their mind and body relax and the martial artist is able to absorb the external environment into one's heart or spirit. They move not based upon thought, but rather upon instinctive reaction. The action of the technique becomes immediately as relevant as the obligatory re-action. Thus, the martial artist is able to transcend all internal and external obstacles and operate perfectly and as one with their surrounding environment.

Traditionally, this "perfection" in martial arts is attained through years of repetition and practice. In martial arts, it is believed that mushin may be realized in realms other than combat, such as during the performance of poomse (form). Similarly, at World Champion Taekwondo we endeavor to exceed the boundaries of the school and art itself, and spread the ideal into all aspects of our students' lives. If the same principles of practice begets perfection can be applied to other aspects of a student's life, such as work, schoolwork or even friendships, the student will experience a more fulfilling and enjoyable way of life- the way of a true Taekwondoist.
